Publication date: August 28th, 2012

Summary (by Goodreads):

“Love is just the beginning… of the end.”

Mason Starling is a champion fencer for Gosforth Academy, but she’s never had to fight for her life. Until now. When a ferocious storm rips through Manhattan and unleashes terrifying creatures onto Gosforth’s campus, Mason barely escapes alive. Without help from the mysterious stranger who appeared in the midst of the storm, she might not have made it at all. But now, in the aftermath, Mason’s life begins to spin dramatically, mystically out of control, and the only one who seems able to help her is the stranger who can remember nothing but his name: Fennrys Wolf.

As Mason and Fenn uncover more about Fenn’s past and the strange events that surround them, they realize that Mason’s family — and its dark allegiance to the ancient Norse gods — is at the center of everything. A predetermined fate seems to be closing in on Mason, but is it possible to change one’s destiny?

Title:  The Archived

Author: Victoria Schwab

Publication date: January 22, 2013

Summary (by Goodreads):

Imagine a place where the dead rest on shelves like books.

Each body has a story to tell, a life seen in pictures that only Librarians can read. The dead are called Histories, and the vast realm in which they rest is the Archive.

Da first brought Mackenzie Bishop here four years ago, when she was twelve years old, frightened but determined to prove herself. Now Da is dead, and Mac has grown into what he once was, a ruthless Keeper, tasked with stopping often-violent Histories from waking up and getting out. Because of her job, she lies to the people she loves, and she knows fear for what it is: a useful tool for staying alive.

Being a Keeper isn’t just dangerous—it’s a constant reminder of those Mac has lost. Da’s death was hard enough, but now her little brother is gone too. Mac starts to wonder about the boundary between living and dying, sleeping and waking. In the Archive, the dead must never be disturbed. And yet, someone is deliberately altering Histories, erasing essential chapters. Unless Mac can piece together what remains, the Archive itself might crumble and fall.

In this haunting, richly imagined novel, Victoria Schwab reveals the thin lines between past and present, love and pain, trust and deceit, unbearable loss and hard-won redemption.

Why I can’t wait:

Where the dead are like library books??  How unique and crazy is that?  This just looks so awesome and the book seems to have a little bit of a different take on the future!  🙂

Across the Universe

I love the setting in this book!  Being set on a space ship that HUGE, with crops growing in it, a colony of people, animals, warehouse of people frozen…it’s just so big and it’s hard to wrap your mind around.  LOVE it.

Eragon

The world in this book is so big.  It has countries and you’re flying from place to place on the back of a dragon.  It’s just so amazing! Plus the story is one of my favorites!

Hunger Games

When I first read this book, I couldn’t believe the world feeling of it.  I want to say this was really my first dystopian novel that didn’t include zombies or vampires….I seriously loved the world building.

Harry Potter

Of course the world itself is the actual world, but Hogwarts is just so magical.  There’s no place like it with moving staircases, the room of requirement, bathrooms with moaning Myrtle, the whomping willow…I could go on and on…including the talking portraits, the ceiling in the dining room…

Angelfall

A world in which the bad guys are angels and it’s every man for himself, Penryn is forced to try to keep her mom sane while looking for her sister since she had been kidnapped by an angel.  It’s just such a different story with a little bit of romance and some awesome one-liners.

Forest of Hands and Teeth

Zombies.  Zombies.  Zombies.  They’re the good scary kind too.  The world setting in this one is a little different since people are “holed” up within a fence in the middle of the forest and have no idea what has happened to the rest of the world.

Poppy

Two faerie courts and a warrior who travels from the Fae world to the real world on a mission.  The magic is so tangible and so amazing! It’s a beautiful world wrapped with an adventure!

Divergent

I love the factions.  I love the people.  I love the way everyone knows who they are, what they stand for is clearly seen, and there is a tangible feeling of disconnect between everyone.  The world setting is so different and so amazing!

Seraphina

Dragons, as a big flying animal and as people, are living in this amazing world with this huge white tower in the middle of the city.  The world includes magical creatures and a world of souls reborn over and over…it’s a completely new story.

The Pledge

This world was so different with the classes seperated by languages.  I wouldn’t necessarily say the world is “vivid”, but it’s so real that it made for an interesting take on the world we live.

Title: Earth Girl

Author: Janet Edwards

Publication date: August 16th

Summary (by Goodreads):

2788. Only the handicapped live on Earth. While everyone else portals between worlds, 18-year-old Jarra is among the one in a thousand people born with an immune system that cannot survive on other planets. Sent to Earth at birth to save her life, she has been abandoned by her parents. She can’t travel to other worlds, but she can watch their vids, and she knows all the jokes they make. She’s an ‘ape’, a ‘throwback’, but this is one ape girl who won’t give in.

Jarra invents a fake background for herself – as a normal child of Military parents – and joins a class of norms that is on Earth to excavate the ruins of the old cities. When an ancient skyscraper collapses, burying another research team, Jarra’s role in their rescue puts her in the spotlight. No hiding at back of class now. To make life more complicated, she finds herself falling in love with one of her classmates – a norm from another planet. Somehow, she has to keep the deception going.

A freak solar storm strikes the atmosphere, and the class is ordered to portal off-world for safety – no problem for a real child of military parents, but fatal for Jarra. The storm is so bad that the crews of the orbiting solar arrays have to escape to planet below: the first landing from space in 600 years. And one is on collision course with their shelter.

Why I can’t wait:

This just sounds SO different than what I’ve been reading lately and it’s set in 2788!  Talk about an imagination! I really cannot wait to see this one come out next month!!!

Seraphina by Rachel Hartman

I had to warm up to this book for some reason.  Once I got going into the book though, it didn’t take long for me to be hooked.  It had a great story with some very well imagined characters!

Title: Seraphina (Seraphina #1)

Author: Rachel Hartman

Publisher: Random House Children’s

Publish Date: July 10, 2012

Summary (by Goodreads):

Four decades of peace have done little to ease the mistrust between humans and dragons in the kingdom of Goredd. Folding themselves into human shape, dragons attend court as ambassadors, and lend their rational, mathematical minds to universities as scholars and teachers. As the treaty’s anniversary draws near, however, tensions are high.

Seraphina Dombegh has reason to fear both sides. An unusually gifted musician, she joins the court just as a member of the royal family is murdered—in suspiciously draconian fashion. Seraphina is drawn into the investigation, partnering with the captain of the Queen’s Guard, the dangerously perceptive Prince Lucian Kiggs. While they begin to uncover hints of a sinister plot to destroy the peace, Seraphina struggles to protect her own secret, the secret behind her musical gift, one so terrible that its discovery could mean her very life.

First Sentences:

At the center of the cathedral stood a model of Heaven called the Golden House.  Its roof unfolded like a flower to reveal a human-sized hollow, in which the body of poor Prince Rufus lay shrouded in gold and white.  His feet rested upon the House’s blessed threshold; his head lay cradled by a nest of gilded stars.

At least, it should have been.  Prince Rufus’s killer had decapitated him.  The Guard had scoured forest and marshland, looking in vain for the prince’s head; he was to be buried without it.

My take:

Disclaimers and such: I received this book from DAC ARC Tours!  Thank you for letting me read and review this ARC and thank you to Random House as well!  So although, I received this book for free in exchange for a review, all thoughts are my own.  This book will be published/released on July 10th!

Cool story to share about the awesomeness of DAC ARC Tours and Random House…  Random House had sent me Seraphina and it never showed…they overnighted me another book!  Both books ended up showing up, but the publisher had an awesome attitude and was sweet enough to send me a second book to make sure I was able to read it.  So I started out with a great attitude towards the book since the people that were behind the book were so sweet!

There are so many characters in this book.  They are very cool imagined characters, but it was a little much to take in at first.  The number of characters (all the names to remember), the new world (trying to remember how it all works), and wrapping my head around dragons (who they are and how they operate)…was a little overwhelming.

Like I mentioned above though…after I got through the middle of the book, I found myself oddly attached to the characters and wondering how the author was going to put everything together.

The country is about to celebrate the peace treaty that was made between humans and dragons 40 years ago, but when the prince’s body is found, decapitated…it sparks countryside unease and starts up finger pointing.  What no one suspects is who Seraphina really is and how determined she is to find out what exactly happened to the prince.

Seraphina is a strong female character.  She’s somewhat feminine, but yet not.  Her secrets have her more worried about how to keep them hidden rather than trying to fall in love.  In the middle of her investigation, she soon finds herself falling for the princess’ fiance, Kiggs.

Dragons in this book are completely different than the “norm” that authors write about.  It reminds me of the dragons Sophie Jordan wrote about in Firelight…they are human, but they can turn into dragons like flipping a switch.  So dragons in essence, walk around humans every day and if they didn’t wear an identifying tag…you would have no idea they were there.

In the middle of it all, Seraphina is forced to come to terms with the voices in her head, who her mother really was, and what to do with her feelings for a prince.  It makes for an exciting ride with a lot of political intrigue, mystery, and a race to find out who murdered Prince Rufus.

I want to see how the story continues so I’ll probably grab the second book when it comes out!  If you read it, let me know what you think!  I can’t say I completely LOVED the book, but it was a good mystery and great world/story.  🙂

Title: Days of Blood and Starlight (Daughter of Smoke & Bone #2)

Author: Laini Taylor

Publication date: November 6th

Summary (by Goodreads):

In this stunning sequel to the highly acclaimed “Daughter of Smoke and Bone,” Karou must come to terms with who and what she is, and how far she’ll go to avenge her people. Filled with heartbreak and beauty, mysteries and secrets, new characters and old favorites, Days of Blood and Starlight brings the richness, color and intensity of the first book to a brand new canvas.

Daughter of Smoke and Bone was declared a “must read” by Entertainment Weekly, was named a Best Book of the Year by Amazon.com, and The New York Times called it “a breath-catching romantic fantasy.”

Why I can’t wait:

I adored Daughter of Smoke and Bone when I first read it.  The writing is just so unique that I have been eagerly anticipating this second book to the series!  The cover looks amazing and although the summary is in desperate need of a boost…I cannot WAIT to get my hands on this book!!

Title: Weighted

Author: Ciara Knight

Publication date: August 2012

Summary (by Goodreads):

The Great War of 2185 is over, but my nightmare has just begun. I am being held captive in the Queen’s ship awaiting interrogation. My only possible ally is the princess, but I’m unsure if she is really my friend or a trap set by the Queen to fool me into sharing the secret of my gift. A gift I keep hidden even from myself. It swirls inside my body begging for release, but it is the one thing the Queen can never discover. Will I have the strength to keep the secret? I’ll know the answer soon. If the stories are true about the interrogators, I’ll either be dead or a traitor to my people by morning.

Why I can’t wait:

First of all…look at that cover!  It’s gorgeous!  Secondly, the fact that it’s a fantasy/dystopian makes me super excited! This is a “novella”…not a TRUE book; so it’s about 40 pages long.  The author apparently gave out a couple of copy’s as ARCs and everyone who’s read it so far has given it 4 and 5 star reviews.  🙂  I can’t wait!
