City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

So I just finished re-reading this book.  I read it about a year or 2 ago when the series first started coming out, loved it then and loved it now.  It’s got everything…angels, demons, warlocks, vampires, werewolves, faeries, and cute boys!  Because all cute boys are dangerous in their own unique ways…

Title: City of Bones (The Mortal Instruments #1)

Author:Cassandra Clare

Summary (by Goodreads):

When fifteen-year-old Clary Fray heads out to the Pandemonium Club in New York City, she hardly expects to witness a murder — much less a murder committed by three teenagers covered with strange tattoos and brandishing bizarre weapons. Then the body disappears into thin air. It’s hard to call the police when the murderers are invisible to everyone else and when there is nothing — not even a smear of blood — to show that a boy has died. Or was he a boy?

This is Clary’s first meeting with the Shadowhunters, warriors dedicated to ridding the earth of demons. It’s also her first encounter with Jace, a Shadowhunter who looks a little like an angel and acts a lot like a jerk. Within twenty-four hours Clary is pulled into Jace’s world with a vengeance, when her mother disappears and Clary herself is attacked by a demon. But why would demons be interested in ordinary mundanes like Clary and her mother? And how did Clary suddenly get the Sight? The Shadowhunters would like to know. .

My take:

So this is a re-read but a first time review on this book.  I kept hearing how the author made a few more books for this series and after all the reading I’ve done lately…I couldn’t remember the whole story.  I forgot how funny this book was!  The snide remarks, the witty comebacks…this is a book that you want to make sure you’re alone reading.  Unless you don’t care about randomly laughing out loud in public and having people stare at you.

Clary starts out as a normal girl, hanging with her friend Simon.  She soon finds herself looking at people…that are invisible to everyone else.  She starts wondering if she’s going crazy and her whole world gets tossed upside down.  After getting into a fight with her mom, she gets a strange phone call.  Clary runs back to her house to find it ransacked and her mother missing…and a demon waiting for her.  *cue girl scream

In the midst of the madness, Clary meets Jace (our cute/hot dangerous boy) and she starts learning about her life, her mom, and who she really is.  Clary finds out that she and Jace have more in common than they think and start an adventure with two siblings, Isabelle and Alec, to find Clary’s mom.

Of course a little romance ensues, but it means it’s the beginning of a love triangle between Simon – Clary – Jace.  Simon has loved Clary first… although she’s too blind to see it.  Jace likes her second… which she’s been seeing that happen. Clary really only likes Jace and thinks of Simon as a brother, but doesn’t want to hurt Simon’s feelings…it’s complicated, but not at the same time.

Ok…this is really random…but if you have watched Vampire Diaries…think “Damon Salvatore” when you read about Jace.  For example:

“Have you fallen in love with the wrong person yet?’
Jace said, “Unfortunately, Lady of the Haven, my one true love remains myself.”
…”At least,” she said, “you don’t have to worry about rejection, Jace Wayland.”
“Not necessarily. I turn myself down occasionally, just to keep it interesting.”

“Don’t order any of the faerie food,” said Jace, looking at her over the top of his menu. “It tends to make humans a little crazy. One minute you’re munching a faerie plum, the next minute you’re running naked down Madison Avenue with antlers on your head. Not,” he added hastily, “that this has ever happened to me.”

And finally:

“Don’t.” Clary raised a warning hand. “I’m not really in the mood right now.”
“That’s got to be the first time a girl’s ever said that to me,” Jace mused.”

You see what I mean by Damon yet?

There was a LOT going on in this book.  The number of supernatural entities running around made for some interesting options for the author.  The second, third, and fourth books in this series are out and ready to be read.  (City of Ashes, City of Glass, City of Fallen Angels)  The fifth book, City of Lost Souls will be out in May and the 6th and final book, City of Heavenly Fire due in 20-freaking-14.  Hopefully that -freaking- placed in-between the year will let you know how I feel about that.

I personally liked the book.  I’ve read a lot of 1 star reviews on Goodreads with 5 stars mixed in.  So…you’re probably going to either love it or hate it.  Sorry.
