Memorial Day

I just want to say “Thank you” to the ones who missed seeing their children being born or seeing a loved one die.

I just want to say “Thank you” whether it was by choice or by being drafted to go into the unknown to stand up for Freedom.

I just want to say “Thank you” to the ones who cried in the face of fear or to those who stood bravely with conviction.

I just want to say “Thank you” to the ones who lost a limb or lost a piece of their soul or mind.

I just want to say “Thank you” to the ones who made it home to family and loved ones…or found their Heavenly home while in a foreign country surrounded by destruction and death.

Thank you.

~

For me Memorial Day isn’t just a day to grill out and shopping excursions…

It’s people I know that are serving or have served:

Family:

Caleb, Jonathon, Michael, and Phillip

Friends:

Zach, Andre, Benjamin, Chad, Jared, Ariel, Jeff, Josh, Josh, Shane, Adam,  Caleb, and Jeff.

To me Memorial Day isn’t just a day…it’s names of people I care about, it’s personal.

Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins

It’s not quite a 5 star, but it’s good book nonetheless.  It’s a lot of back and forth emotions but it’s got an interesting take on Nephilim, angels, and demons.

Title: Sweet Evil (The Sweet Trilogy #1)

Author: Wendy Higgins

Publisher: Harper Teen

Summary (by Goodreads):

Embrace the Forbidden

What if there were teens whose lives literally depended on being bad influences?

This is the reality for sons and daughters of fallen angels.

Tenderhearted Southern girl Anna Whitt was born with the sixth sense to see and feel emotions of other people. She’s aware of a struggle within herself, an inexplicable pull toward danger, but Anna, the ultimate good girl, has always had the advantage of her angel side to balance the darkness within. It isn’t until she turns sixteen and meets the alluring Kaidan Rowe that she discovers her terrifying heritage and her willpower is put to the test. He’s the boy your daddy warned you about. If only someone had warned Anna.

Forced to face her destiny, will Anna embrace her halo or her horns?

First Sentences:

The newborn wailed as the midwife wrapped her in a receiving blanket and quickly handed her to Sister Ruth.  Even stooped with age, the oldest nun at the convent exuded a regal air as she shushed the tiny bundle, attempting to shield her from the sight of her mother’s last breaths.

My take:

Well…this book definitely had a new spin on the whole angels/demons/nephilim thing.  It’s not just angels that are procreating with humans, demons have started creating their own kids…let’s just start with that.  This is not the same old stuff…

Anna is a girl who is just about 16 and is a little … off.  She sees colors/auras around someone when they are feeling an emotion.  She’s been able to do this since she was little, but since she was adopted by Patti when she was younger…she doesn’t have the ability to ask her parents if it’s a genetic thing or if she’s actually crazy.

After going to a concert, Anna finds the first person that she’s ever been able to NOT “see” an emotion.  He just so happens to be extremely hott (“worth two T’s” as the author put it), named Kaidan, and he’s the drummer for the band at the concert.  She soon becomes obsessed with finding out who he is and in the process, figures out what she is as well.  Curiosity kills cats, kids….just remember that.

A couple conversations later, Anna soon finds out that BOTH of her parents weren’t human.  Her mother just so happened to be a guardian angel and her father…let’s put it this way.  What if you found out that your father was in prison, but that he was also a Duke.  Now, what he’s the Duke ooooooof…makes all the difference.  Say he was a demon and the Duke of substance abuse…see?  Makes ALL the difference.  Now his name isn’t John or Dave or Adam or even Carl…it’s Beliel.

Anna knows that Kaiden is no bueno, but lets him kiss her anyways.  He soon turns a cold shoulder on her and she’s devastated….so anytime her and her friends hang out….it’s awkward.

Anna has to figure out her life, how Kaiden fits in, and has to understand the new rules associated with her life.  Will she give into the evil that gnaws and tempts her daily or will she stay strong and be good?  What happens when she draws attention to herself and the Dukes start sniffing around and asking questions?

Again, it’s a good book…not quite a 5 star.  It was a lot of back and forth emotions but overall a decent read.  The way the author left the book…makes me want to figure out where they’re taking the story next.

(Totally lost fact that today is Memorial Day and went out shopping and let this get posted without finishing!  Agh!!)

Poppy:Awake by Riana Lucas

In this second book…it starts off RIGHT where the last one ended and keeps going.  Totally made my day.  Love that.  Plus this book has it’s own adventure, secrets, romance, new faces…it’s just a total 5 star.  Well, if my characters don’t get to kissing soon, it may not stay 5 star for long…

Title: Poppy:Awake (The Deadly Flower Series #2)

Author: Riana Lucas

Publisher: Self-published

Summary (by Goodreads):

In the second book of The Deadly Flower Series, Poppy:Awake, Poppy has a feeling that there is something important she needs to do, but she just cannot remember what it is. After being nearly killed at the hands of Holly, Poppy slowly regains consciousness as a prisoner of the Seelie Court. At least that’s what Poppy believes at first. She cannot help but to wonder why she is being treated so well. She has a luxurious bedroom instead of a cell in the dungeon and a hand maid by the name of Willow who is assigned only to her. To anyone else this would seem to be a perfect arrangement, but it becomes quite clear that the Queen and the entire Seelie Court has a secret. Unfortunately this is not the only problem. Poppy wakes up every morning from horrible dreams that she just cannot seem to remember. But they leave her with a sense of urgency to see her friends Reed and Rho, who she now believes are in trouble over at the Unseelie Court. Will the Queen let Poppy in on the secrets of her Court? Will she ever be allowed to return home? And will she reunite with Reed and Rho and finally discover what is happening with them?

First Sentences:

I awake with a start.  My hand automatically reaches under my pillow for a dagger that is not there.  I reach around, hoping that it has only shifted in my sleep, but I am unable to locate it.  I jerk up in my bed and throw my pillow aside.  It is not there.  I look around the room frantically trying to locate any threat.  Something woke me up and I am not sure what it was.

My take:

Disclaimers and such: I received this book from Riana Lucas, herself!  She was brave enough to send me 2 books in this series for me to read and review!  So although, I received this book for free in exchange for a review, all thoughts are my own.

You know what I love, more than a good story?  I love it when authors pick up RIGHT where they left off.  Seriously! It’s like pressing “pause” on your favorite movie and then being able to go right back and hit “play”.

*SPOILER FOR THE FIRST BOOK* Poppy in the last book had been running around with Reed (a halfling) in order to take him back to the Unseelie court, when she finds herself being tracked by another Fae in the human realm.  The first story leaves us with Reed, Poppy, and an uncooperative Holly walking through the woods to get to a mountain in order to create a portal and go back to the Fae realm.  Unfortunately, when Poppy makes makes a portal, she finds herself staring at the Seelie Queen and Reed gets sucked into another portal that opens with Damian inside.  Talk about a cliff hanger…. *END SPOILER*

So now…Poppy wakes up in a comfortable bed with servants who attend to her needs, a new wardrobe, amazing food, etc.  She is utterly confused as to why the Seelie Queen would treat her so nicely since she’s a prisoner.   She also knows that she’s forgetting something important, that for some reason she needs to do something, but can’t quite remember.  As Poppy slowly unravels the secrets she finds herself growing more confused and more worried about Reed, who is in the Unseelie prisons while she’s at the Seelie court.

First of all…Reed and Poppy…they need to freaking kiss already.  I’m DYING for them to do some lip locking action.

I want this…shamelessly.

Second of all, I love a good rescue story…especially if the girl has to rescue the boy.  Plus Poppy’s made some new “friends” at the Seelie court and has an entourage to help her sneak back into familiar Unseelie territory.

Thirdly, this book had A LOT going on.  Secrets, journeys, new friends, a death…it’s all packed together in this second book! The ending of this book left me satisfied, but still wanting more.

I really enjoyed the second book of the series!  I almost think the first book and this one could be worked together to be combined, but it’s a good either way!  🙂  I’m in love with faeries!  I think I JUST now realized that.

I’m dying for the next book…Riana, I’d love to read it when you get it finished!  *hint hint*  🙂

Top Ten Blogs or Sites I Read That Aren’t About Books

Top Ten Tuesday: “Top Ten Blogs/Sites I Read That Aren’t About Books”

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun way to spice up Tuesdays (because everyone hates Mondays, Wednesdays are  the halfway point, Thursdays are “little Fridays”, and everyone knows about Fridays… :)) and it’s hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

~

Apparently I’m TOO bookish…so I’m breaking it up with 5 non-bookish and 5 bookish sites!  🙂  I’m such a rebel!!

Top 5 NON Bookish sites:

Post Secret – If you haven’t visited this site before, watch the video below to get an idea of how amazing it is (the video is a little lengthy, but the ending had me in tears)!  Basically people send this gentleman a post card with a secret they’ve been keeping.  It’s anonymous and for some people, it’s a way to get that “thing” off their chest that they’ve been holding onto for a long time!  (There are a few postcards on the site that are graphic or sexual in nature, so be forewarned.)  He updates the blog every Sunday with new secrets.

Facebook – Do I really need to explain my addiction to Facebook?  Haha!!  Always on it!

Pinterest – This is the place where we have magical looking houses, the best recipes that makes food look like they came out of magazines, and where we have oodles of time to do all the DIY projects.  I LOVE this site!  It’s like a real life fairytale!  Haha!

Gofobo – (Thank me later!)  This national website is a site that posts up FREE screenings for movies that are coming out.  You do have to create an account, but it’s ABSOLUTELY free.  No gimmicks or weird things to do.  You basically create an account, search your zip code and sign up for passes for movies that interest you.  If you find you CANNOT go to the screening, please opt out so someone else can grab your passes instead.  Always show up to the movie at least an hour to an hour and a half ahead of time to turn in passes, grab seats, etc.  There will ALWAYS be a line for the screenings (it’s FREE!).  Needless to say, I check this religiously to see when new movies pop up for private screenings open to the public.

The Pioneer Woman – She’s HILARIOUS and has the most amazing blog.  I love reading about the rustic-ness of life for her.  A city girl turned country.  PLUS her recipes are always awesome and she takes fabulous photos while making her food so you see step by step what it’s supposed to look like as you go along!!

Top 5 BOOKISH sites:

Amazon.com – I know this site REALLY isn’t bookish…but it’s basically all I use amazon.com for!  I love browsing their books for the Kindle…seeing which ones are on sale, which ones are FREE,..etc.  I’m addicted.

Goodreads – I use this site religiously!  I’m always checking lists of books that will be coming out, lists that show amazing covers, lists that have books that “are like [such and such book] “, etc.  This site connects authors and readers together really well!  I feel like Goodreads is a gold mine for bookish people in general!!  Haha!

NetGalley – this site is geared towards Librarians, people in the media, educators, journalists, serious bloggers, etc.  Publishers use this website to post their books to it and allow people to read and review their book BEFORE it’s published! You can’t be afraid of rejection when you use this site.  You may request to read the book, but be ready for companies to turn you down.  ALSO, if you get a book, be kind and review in a timely fashion.  If you decide halfway through you can’t stand the book, you are allowed to “reject” the book and let the publisher know it wasn’t your “cup of tea”.

My City’s Library Website – I’m constantly checking on my “hold” list to see if books have shipped or not.  PLUS I’m always putting more books on hold or having to renew the books that I have out!  Plus my library just recently have been offering books out as ebooks…so I’ve been keeping an eye out for books to borrow online!  🙂

Poppy by Riana Lucas

*ahem*  I have a new author for you guys to keep your eye on!!  (Plus she’s self-published and selflessly has her first book for 99 cents for the Kindle.)  I haven’t read many books on faeries but I enjoyed this book and cannot wait to start on the second one! 🙂

Title: Poppy (The Deadly Flower Series #1)

Author: Riana Lucas

Publisher: Self Published

Summary (by Goodreads):

Poppy, a young female Warrior Faery from the Unseelie Court is sent out to retrieve Halflings from the human world to help build her Kings army. A seasoned warrior, she sets out on what should be a routine exercise, but not this mission. Suddenly Poppy’s world is turned upside down. She meets an odd Halfling – Reed, portals between worlds close, assassin attempts, and much much more.

First Paragraph:

I was summoned to the Unseelie King’s Throne Room.

As I walk through the massive wooden doors, I take in the white marble that covers every surface of the room.  The veins of pure gold running through the marble are the only color on the floor, ceiling, and walls.  The room is cold and dreary.  There are no paintings, or statues, or any other sort of decoration.  There is nothing that could take the attention away from King Foxglove.  The King insists on being the center of attention, which is why the Throne Room’s location is so important.

My take:

Disclaimers and such: I received this book from Riana Lucas, herself!  She was brave enough to send me 2 books in this series for me to read and review!  So although, I received this book for free in exchange for a review, all thoughts are my own.

First thought after finishing the first book…”What?!?  What happens??  That’s it?!?”  *checks Kindle for possible download error*

Explanation: the book ends with a cliff hanger that is Oscar worthy and the book itself is shorter than a normal novel…so we definitely get an amazing feeling for Poppy and Reed in a short amount of time PLUS the cliff hanger.  *throws hand up*  I’m hooked.

Poppy is a female warrior faery in the Unseelie court and is sent on a mission to go into the human world to retrieve a “halfling” (half faery and half human).  Before she leaves, Damian (her mentor) lets her in on some crazy news.  The rival and enemy Queen, of the Seelie court, has apparently achieved enough power to close the portals to the human world, meaning should Poppy fail to come back in time…she could get stuck in the human world forever.

Once Poppy gets to the human realm, she quickly locates her “Halfling” and finds him giving a surf lesson…we all know about surfer boys and how beautiful they are… Plus the fact that he’s half Fae apparently enhances his looks to give him that “mmmm….yummy!” factor.

Not long after her introduction with Reed, Poppy finds herself being hunted and shot at by another Fae and the chase is on to keep one step ahead of this villain while keeping herself and Reed alive.  Theeeeeeeere’s just one slight problem…the portals aren’t opening and Poppy seems to be stuck with Reed in the human realm.  Poppy soon finds herself making friends with this Halfling, even though she’s never connected with any other of her missions before, and we see some possible feelings blossom.  I love seeing characters fall in love…unknowingly!

Now…the ONLY thing negative about this book is that it’s short.  I felt like I should have been able to turn the page and keep going, but I ran right into a brick wall.  Thank goodness for me…the author was awesome enough to send me the second book!  I totally recommend it though and I think you’ll find yourself hooked like me.

Top Ten Characters I’d Like to See on a Reality Show

Top Ten Tuesday: “Top Ten Authors Characters I’d Like to See on a Reality Show”

Top Ten Tuesday is a fun way to spice up Tuesdays (because everyone hates Mondays, Wednesdays are  the halfway point, Thursdays are “little Fridays”, and everyone knows about Fridays… :)) and it’s hosted by The Broke and Bookish.

~

So since I’m more involved with characters than authors…I’m going to put a twist on today’s Top Ten…I’m going to put my top ten characters (that I did in my Top Ten Characters in Books a couple weeks) that I’d like to see on a reality OR TV show.

~

Character 1:

Gale (from Hunger Games series)

Easy…Survivor.  He totally needs his own “arena” to survive, hopefully show up Peeta, but not have to kill anyone.  …too easy. (Depending on the “arena”…he could always be the next Bachelor….)  🙂

Character 2:

Reed (from The Premonition series)

Part avenging angel, total good guy…COPS.  He would have fun chasing down the bad guys and putting them away in jail…I could see him and Zee being partners and scaring the living daylights out of the bad guys…  doesn’t hurt that they’re handsome too.

Character 3:

Emmett (from Twilight series)

So I thought about Punk’d…you know he’d be great at that show.  BUT then I thought about the Dog Whisperer (he’d do great trying to train Jake)  I mean seriously…him playing with all the dogs and then trying to use his “Cesar” tricks on Jake and the pack…???  This was too much fun…I got the giggles every time I thought about him being the Dog Whisperer….c’mon you did too…

Character 4:

Belle (from Beauty and the Beast)

For Belle…I thought American Idol or Beauty & the Geek, but then I realized…she’s great but not a pop singer and she’s married a Prince.  So then I changed my mind to Extreme Makeover: Home Edition…..did you see the castle?  When you have a candlestick for a cleaner (who flirts with the duster) and a beast who lives there…who cleans that thing?  And it stayed like that for yeeeeears!  It needed a makeover…stat.

Character 5:

Saphira (from the Inheritance series)

I had trouble placing a dragon…I thought Deadliest Catch…but she’s a bit more partial to sheep.  So I thought, Hell’s Kitchen.  That way she can eat delicious food, Chef Ramsey can use her to scare the bejeezus out of the contestants, and maybe she could eat the contestant when they lose…talk about motivation.

Character 6:

Kira (from Partials)

For her, I couldn’t really come up with a reality show other than like Amazing Race and that sounded lame.  So I changed her to the tv show House because she totally wants to figure things out and does it in an unconventional way.  She and Dr. House would get along….as much as House lets people get along with him.

Character 7:

Four (from Divergent series)

For Four…I thought of Fear Factor, but realized that he would only do that if he HAD to.  So I let him do what he wanted and placed him in Miami Ink.  This way he can come up with some wicked cool designs for his or Tris’ next tattoos!

Character 8:

Neville Longbottom (from Harry Potter series)

Neville…Ax Men.  If you saw the movie…the way he handled that sword at the end…I could see him wearing flannel and looking cute while cutting down trees.

Character 9:

Minny (from The Help)

Real Housewives of Orange County.  Can’t help it.  She would be SO awesome and would have the insider scoop on everything!  I thought about Housewives of New Jersey, but she’s such a southern girl and I couldn’t just up and move her North like that and I thought about Atlanta, but I figured Minny needed some beach and sun time. I don’t watch any of these shows but have heard enough to know!

Character 10:

Kat (the Heist Society)

A master thief, screwed up family, tough as nails…The Apprentice. I thought about The Mole, but since it wasn’t current, I figured Apprentice was good enough.  I could see her being the quiet sleeper in the back of the group that stays around until that crucial moment where she totally plays her part and wins the show.
