Title: Immortal City (Immortal City #1)
Author: Scott Speer
Publisher: Penguin Young Readers Group
Summary (By Goodreads):
Jackson Godspeed is the hottest young Angel in a city filled with them.
He’s days away from becoming a full Guardian, and people around the world are already competing for the chance to be watched over by him. Everyone’s obsessed with the Angels and the lucky people they protect – everyone except for Madison Montgomery.
Maddy’s the one girl in Angel City who doesn’t breathlessly follow the Angels on TV and gossip blogs. When she meets Jackson, she doesn’t recognize him. But Jackson is instantly captivated by her, and against all odds the two fall in love.
Maddy is swiftly caught up in Jackson’s scene, a world of glamour, paparazzi – and murder. A serial killer is on the loose, leaving dead Angels’ wings for the police to find on the Walk of Fame. Even the Guardians are powerless to protect themselves in the face of this threat & and this time it’s up to Maddy to save Jackson.
At 3 a.m., the Pacific Coast Highway was nothing more than a gray ribbon winding through the ocean fog. Despite being more than a little buzzed, Brad downshifted, smashed the gas pedal, and sent his BMW M5 surging forward. His iPod had shuffled to “California Love”, by 2Pac. He turned it up.
I was hooked on this book after the first chapter. I even re-capped it for my husband who did a “hmm…that does sound cool!” So needless to say…I kind of liked this book!
The idea is that angels are the new celebrities. They came out publicly to the world and then started charging for their protective services. So instead of people just hoping for a miracle, they now only go to the highest bidders. Angels walk the red carpet, create their own fashion line, have an angel network (A!) and even have action figures made from themselves.
Angels are the “A list”, gorgeous, completely “god-like” celebrities. The author makes music videos for celebrities…so I’m assuming he knows this stuff because the book clearly made it feel as if the info would be true.
Maddy, normal girl with parents who died years ago, works at her Uncle’s diner trying to help make ends meet while being a normal teenager in high school. When Jackson Godspeed, a famous angel about to go through the ceremony to make him a guardian angel, literally walks into her life, they start a relationship and not everyone is excited about them being together. Including an ex-girlfriend, Maddy’s uncle, Jackson’s step-dad, the angel community…etc.
In the midst of everything, severed angel wings show up on the Walk of Fame over the different stars of the angels. Then the angel bodies are found and it soon becomes clear that there’s an angel serial killer. Kicker is…Jackson is the next intended target.
It’s a mystery with romance, an action with rebellion…It’s just good!
There are a couple POV’s that flip flop through the chapters…I wasn’t such a big fan of them, but I enjoyed the book so much that I really didn’t mind after a while. I just tried to race myself through the POV that would “interrupt” to try to get back to the character I prefer to find out what happens next.
I hope you enjoy the book as much as I did! I don’t know when the second one is set to be released…but I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for it!!
