I have mixed feelings on this book. The idea behind the book was an interesting twist. This book has a MAJOR cliffhanger…notice I capitalized “major”. I liked the characters, I just wish we knew more about them. It had a great twist on the “elements” idea for a storyline. Element books always make me think of Captain Planet….
Title: Dangerous (Element Preservers Series #1)
Author: Alycia Linwood
Summary (by Goodreads):
Ria is an 18-year-old girl who has just started going to the University of Magic, a special university for those who have one of the four elements: fire, water, air and earth. There she meets Michael, a boy whose element is different from hers, which makes their romantic involvement seem impossible because mixing of elements can have horrible consequences. She also feels threatened by Adrian, a very dangerous magic disease carrier. Magic disease, which surged as a result of bad mixing of elements, turns people into cold-hearted killers, who have a strong desire to take someone’s element as they do not have their own. Ria’s best friend, Paula, is fascinated by Adrian like most of the girls at the University and wants him to help her with her research about the disease. All Ria’s beliefs are put to test when she starts having the symptoms of the disease and the only person she can turn to is Adrian.
Disclaimers and such: I received this book from the group on Goodreads called: “Shut Up & Read” in their Read It & Reap section. So although, I received this book for free in exchange for a review, all thoughts are my own. 🙂
As the summary explains, Ria lives in a world where there are people who have been blessed by the God of Magic to have an ability to control one of 4 elements: water, earth, wind, or fire. Our girl Ria has the ability to control fire.
She is an “incoming freshman” to the University of Magic with her best friend Paula and as she starts classes, she starts a relationship with a boy named Michael. When it comes to relationships, two same elements are allowed to get married and have children, but should two different element carriers get married, the consequences are huge for the children they bring into the world. So back to Ria and Michael….. Michael has the water element and Ria’s parents flip out when they hear about Ria dating him. As any normal fire element parent would!
At the same time, Ria is having issues with a boy named Adrian who doesn’t have an element and a carrier of the magic disease...a child of two different element parents coming together. Ria doesn’t understand Paula and her decision to date Adrian but reluctantly agrees to try to get along with him for the sake of her friendship. Things take a crazy turn and after a few incidents she soon finds herself wondering if there’s something wrong with her.
As for the book itself, I liked it; I read it in 3 sittings. I gave it a 4 star on Goodreads. I felt “short changed” on some of the characters; in particular, I wanted to know more about Michael and Paula. In the book it mentioned Ria trying to get one of her other friends to go shopping with her, but the book only focuses on Paula, Michael, Adrian, and Ria. No other girls or friends are mentioned. There are also some grammatical errors and some missing words here and there, but overall it’s a solid book.
Remember….MAJOR cliffhanger. I do not kid about my cliffhangers…this one especially. There is nothing out there saying when the next book in the series will be released. If you feel up to the challenge, you can get it for free on Amazon.com for your Kindle or iPad/iPhone.
One other disclaimer I want to throw out there is the fact that there is premarital sex amongst the characters/teenagers. I felt it was somewhat relevant to the story as the magic disease is passed through sex, but I wanted to make sure no one came back to blame me for not warning them.
