So I just got done reading the second book in this series when I realized that I never did a review on the first one!! *Gasp! How could I have NOT reviewed this book?? I LOVED this book and pined for the second one. So, better late than never..here’s my take on this first book of this trilogy! The review for the second book will be published on Monday!
Title: Across the Universe (Across the Universe #1)
Author: Beth Revis
Summary (by Goodreads):
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.
Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone – one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship – tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn’t do something soon, her parents will be next.
Now, Amy must race to unlock Godspeed’s hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there’s only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.
Like I mentioned above, I loved this book. It was hard for me to wrap my head around the size of the ship they were on with the amount of people on board, but that just means our author has one giant imagination! And it’s a good one at that!
The idea is that scientists have discovered a planet that would allow humans to inhabit it and they have put together a team of military personnel, scientists, engineers, etc. to send to this new planet. Catch is that it’s 300 YEARS away…to make sure this group of people make it there…alive, they freeze the bodies in cryo chambers and once the ship lands on the planet those piloting and running the ship have instructions on freeing the frozen people. But something does NOT go according to plan. Just wait…we’re getting to the good part!
Amy is a 17 year old girl who is frozen alongside her mother and father…and is woken up before they land…before her parents. She awakes to find that someone out of the thousands of people on board has started trying to unfreeze people improperly, thus killing them. She wonders if all she’s going to have left is artificial sunsets, fake rainstorms, “wi-coms” (imbedded walkie talkie/com system inside people), and live with a group of people that all look the same. But she takes an interest and special notice of a boy named Elder and he most definitely takes notice of her. See! Here we go! Love story, coming up!
Who is trying to wake people early? What has happened with Godspeed? Will they reach the planet? Will Amy be able to talk and see her parents before she, herself dies of old age? It’s a mystery, sci-fi, dystopian, ya fiction, romance…all in one. Is it too much? Too much to handle?
So the second book is out already, A Million Suns was just released on January 10th of this year with the final book Shades of Earth set to release next January.
PS: As for a cliff hanger….meeeeeeeeeh….not reeeeeally, but kinda.
