So the author said she got her insperation for this book after watching Les Miserables! How coincidental!! I JUST saw Les Mis 2 weeks ago!! It’s a great little dystopian with a budding romance. No love triangle. We always like it when there’s no crazy drama, don’t we?
Title: Legend (Legend #1)
Author: Marie Lu
Summary (by Goodreads):
What was once the western United States is now home to the Republic, a nation perpetually at war with its neighbors. Born into an elite family in one of the Republic’s wealthiest districts, fifteen-year-old June is a prodigy being groomed for success in the Republic’s highest military circles. Born into the slums, fifteen-year-old Day is the country’s most wanted criminal. But his motives may not be as malicious as they seem.
From very different worlds, June and Day have no reason to cross paths – until the day June’s brother, Metias, is murdered and Day becomes the prime suspect. Caught in the ultimate game of cat and mouse, Day is in a race for his family’s survival, while June seeks to avenge Metias’ death. But in a shocking turn of events, the two uncover the truth of what has really brought them together, and the sinister lengths their country will go to keep its secrets.
I enjoyed reading this book. It shows that there are supposed to be more books, but I haven’t been able to find when the next book is going to be released or what the title will be. It’s good in that it doesn’t end on a horrendous cliff hanger or else I would’ve been a little upset!
The idea behind the story is about a boy who is “riff raff” and causes trouble. Girl’s brother is killed by said “riff raff” boy. Girl goes undercover to find boy and seek revenge… A relationship starts and a complicated romance begins. Of course there’s a lot more that goes into that!
Day is our “riff raff” boy. He lives in a world where kids are rounded up at a certain age to take the “trials”…a test of brains and braun. Those who pass with flying colors are assigned jobs, those who fail are sent to labor camps. Day fails his test but escapes and lives to cause mayhem in the streets of the Republic. Until he visits home and sees his little brother dying of the plague…he’s forced to try and steal a cure from the hospital…it doesn’t go too well.
June is our girl whose parents have died in a car crash and it’s just her and her brother Metias. She went and took her trials and not only passed…but aced the tests and had a perfect score. Of course it’s the girls with all the brains!! : ) But Metias is murdered one night and it puts in motion June’s actions to find Day and bring him to justice.
Each chapter flip flops between the characters point of view. I normally don’t like that…but the author does it in a way that’s not annoying. A few people mentioned that it seems as though June and Day have the same “tone” in their voices except one is supposed to be a girl and the other a boy…also there wasn’t as much chemistry as I thought there would be. It was a rushed feeling with a lot of hesitation.
I hope a second book is written. I want to know what happens to a character that’s left behind. I didn’t say which one…*smile…you’ll be reading and trying to figure out who!
