Anna Dressed In Blood by Kendare Blake

So as you can tell…the books I was wanting to read around Halloween got read just before Christmas! How horrifyingly wonderful is that?  This book definitely talks about things that go “bump in the night”.  It’s a story about a boy who kills ghosts and about a ghost that kills everyone…but him.  dun dun dun!!!!

Title: Anna Dressed in Blood

Author: Kendare Blake

Summary (by Goodreads):

Cas Lowood has inherited an unusual vocation: He kills the dead.

So did his father before him, until he was gruesomely murdered by a ghost he sought to kill. Now, armed with his father’s mysterious and deadly athame, Cas travels the country with his kitchen-witch mother and their spirit-sniffing cat. Together they follow legends and local lore, trying to keep up with the murderous dead—keeping pesky things like the future and friends at bay.

When they arrive in a new town in search of a ghost the locals call Anna Dressed in Blood, Cas doesn’t expect anything outside of the ordinary: track, hunt, kill. What he finds instead is a girl entangled in curses and rage, a ghost like he’s never faced before. She still wears the dress she wore on the day of her brutal murder in 1958: once white, now stained red and dripping with blood. Since her death, Anna has killed any and every person who has dared to step into the deserted Victorian she used to call home.

But she, for whatever reason, spares Cas’s life.

My take:

This was a cool book.  It gave me the creeps at times and at other times made me wonder just what the mess was going on!  Not to mention the cover, kicks butt….it’s awesome.

Anna has killed every living soul that dared to walk into her home.  She has mutilated them, tortured them, torn their teeth out, torn them limb from limb, and has even reached inside them to pull out their insides.   She is named “Anna dressed in blood” for a reason.  It was rumored that she had been murdered on her way to the prom.  No one knows who killed her…only Anna knows.  When you do find out her story…it’s disgusting and horrible.

Cas and his mom travel from state to state, city to city, to find and “kill” ghosts who murder people.  Cas is seemingly the only one of his kind…after his dad, who had been murdered by someone or something that literally tried to eat him chunk by chunk.  He gets tips from people and will research, track, find, and kill the ghost that’s been causing the mayhem.  Anna is somehow different.  For some reason…there’s always and oddity, why else would someone write a book about it?

Every ghost seems to not know they’ve died, but Anna knows she’s dead.  Anna doesn’t want to kill Cas…she doesn’t know why and after watching her kill someone in front of him, Cas is pretty relieved himself.  He got to keep his head another day!!

Disclaimer for people who don’t like “dark arts” or worry about what is in it.  This book does feature witches, spells, spirits, ghosts (obviously), and superstitions.  It does get gory at times, but I kinda skimmed through it knowing what should have happened and just went along with the story.

There’s already a second book that’s going to be published next August to be a follow up book.  There’s no need to freak out or panic…the first book closes itself nicely I think.  There’s no cliff hanger and nothing that would make you want to jump up and scream “What!?!?!  Why!?!?”   So yeah…you’re good to read it.
