The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan

Ok, so this is not a book I go screaming out to people “READ!!!” as it’s got zombies in it.  People are a little iffy with zombies…but then again people were like that with sparkly vampires before Twilight …meh…I guess some still are.

Title: The Forest of Hands and Teeth (book 1 of the trilogy)

Author: Carrie Ryan

Summary:

In Mary’s world there are simple truths. The Sisterhood always knows best. The Guardians will protect and serve. The Unconsecrated will never relent. And you must always mind the fence that surrounds the village; the fence that protects the village from the Forest of Hands and Teeth. But, slowly, Mary’s truths are failing her. She’s learning things she never wanted to know about the Sisterhood and its secrets, and the Guardians and their power, and about the Unconsecrated and their relentlessness. When the fence is breached and her world is thrown into chaos, she must choose between her village and her future—between the one she loves and the one who loves her. And she must face the truth about the Forest of Hands and Teeth. Could there be life outside a world surrounded in so much death?

My take:

So I had heard a few good things about this book and started reading it thinking, this should be interesting.  I read it in 3 sittings.  Interesting turned out to be a good and exciting read!  Don’t get me wrong, it’s got the love triangle and the fickle girl who doesn’t know what she wants.  *sigh  What teenage girl REALLY knows what they want right?  Right?

For me…it wasn’t really creepy, wasn’t scary, and it didn’t give me nightmares.  So if that’s what you’re looking for…sorry.  The story is based around a girl named Mary.  She lives in a little town in the middle of the forest surrounded by fences to keep the “Unconsecrated” out.  She sees a picture that her mother has…it’s got a big and blue looking thing called the “ocean” filled with tons and tons of water.  Which is ridiculous, since all she has ever seen is the forest.  An event happens and it all goes terribly wrong and she finds herself along with a few friends defending themselves in the Forest of Hands and Teeth.  Dun, dun dun!!!!

So zombies…or not?  That is what you must decide.  If you read it, let me know what you think.  I see mixed reviews everywhere…so it may be one of those books you like or hate.  meh…like sparkly vampires

  1. How could anyone be iffy about zombies? They eat brains for goodness’ sakes! They are amazing. Just watch–the next Twilight ‘revolution’ will be about zombies and/or half-zombies and some YA author will make a fortune off of them. But really, your blog looks great. Keep up the good work!

By the way, I’m a native Texan as well and proud of it!

    • Thank you so much! 🙂 I don’t think I’ve met any other group of people who are more proud about their state than Texans…but then again, I am kinda one-sided maybe. Haha! Thanks again for the kind words!
